why so many zombie movies?

Seems like everyone these days is making a horror flick! In many of the posts on this forum, the guys are making horror flicks (see Menacing Woods). I'm intrigued: what's the attraction to this particular genre?

It's cheap, doesn't require much thinking, and, no matter how shite it is, someone will watch it, as demonstrated by the success of the Friday the 13th series.

Most people?s expectations when approaching zombie films aren?t that high. If its shit most people wont really care ? they?ll probably get off on the blood and gore factor anyway. Also people ?expect? the element of cheese, so if its shit, who cares? - all they want is gore god-dam it!!

I find it hilarious when people say they choose it to keep expectations low. I want people to have high expectations of my work! Don't you people have any pride?

Hmm, I think I tend to agree with Generic. I'd rather not have the people coming to my films a) expecting shit, and b) getting it!

I agree with you but who cares.

I never want to make a horror film because I dont really like them that much.
However it depends on your situation. You could be a crap writer but by doing a cheap horror film you get to showcase your talents as DOP or Special Effects technician etc.
You could write a really great script for a drama, but not everyone has access to the actors to back it up.

Hey,
I just did a short 4 minute horror movie yesterday for the express purpose of seeing if I could get people to jump. It is a prototype of one I plan to make soon, and just trying to get how suspense builds down, to some degree. Horror movies for me aren't about the gore, but more of the 'boo', which is hard to make effectively.

Not that the film maker has a low expectation of his own work, but the general public (generally) hold zombie movies in low regard, so if its shit, their not to arsed (like I said they?ll still buzz of the blood and gore no matter how shit it is) - but if its good, then you?ve just amazed the little fuckers and turned them to the dark side...

Zombie movies are great, but I prefer my zombies live and on stage thank you very much.

I think zombies are popular because they’re simple, creepy, and surprisingly versatile. You can make them scary, funny, or even use them to explore ideas about society and human behavior. Plus, they’re relatively cheap to film compared with many other monsters. And let’s be honest—watching a bunch of zombies get destroyed is just entertaining.
